Shingle Roofing

Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material in the US — and for good reason. Here's what every homeowner should know before buying.

What Are Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are made from a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules. They're lightweight, affordable, and available in dozens of colors and profiles. In Southern California, they're the go-to choice for most single-family homes.

The Two Main Types

3-Tab Shingles

The traditional, flat-looking shingle. Less expensive but thinner and more prone to wind damage. Lifespan is typically 15–20 years. Less common on new installations today.

Architectural (Dimensional) Shingles

Thicker, layered shingles that mimic the look of wood shake or slate. More durable, better wind resistance, and a longer lifespan of 25–30 years. The standard choice for most modern installations.

What Does Shingle Roofing Cost?

In the Los Angeles area, expect to pay between $8,000 and $20,000 for a full shingle roof replacement on an average-sized home. The range depends on roof size, pitch, material grade, and labor. Always get at least three written bids before committing.

3-Tab Shingles$7,000 – $12,000
Architectural Shingles$10,000 – $20,000
Premium Designer Shingles$15,000 – $30,000+

What to Ask Before You Sign

  • Are you removing the old shingles or layering over them? (Removal is better.)
  • What brand and product line of shingles are you using?
  • Does the bid include new underlayment, drip edge, and flashing?
  • What is the manufacturer warranty and what does it cover?
  • Is your crew licensed and insured? Can I verify your C-39 license?
